In this hub I want cover an important subject that is quite close to the heart of those involved here at Hubpages and generally across the World Wide Web.

The subject is Plagiarism, it is upsetting to find that your original content was copied or published somewhere else without giving you the credit.

I know how that feels when someone copies your content and publishes it on their website or blog without your permission. Especially if you find that a hub you published some months back which was approved for publication, to later be marked as ‘Needs Revision’. That feels painful.

In such cases if you want to claim rights of your content or want to check your hub or other intellectual property for its originality, you may want to use a tool to do just that. Listed below are some of the free online plagiarism checkers that you can use.

These free plagiarism checker tools do not require any downloads. You can use these online checkers for finding out how original your own works is and also for locating if anyone else on the World Wide Web is using your material.

Personally I use these tools and can safely recommend them based on how accurate the results are for the checks I have done, these Plagiarism checker software work by comparing the content that you enter to other content all over the internet for possible presence or close resemblance.

The tool then provides you with results of the investigation with links to those sites that may have similar content to that you are just checking.

What constitutes plagiarism?

Plagiarism has been around for as long as people have been reading and writing, but the advantage we have today is that using computer technology it is very easy to investigate and locate if anyone has stolen your intellectual property (as in your wonderful HUB). So what constitutes Plagiarism? Simply put, if you create and submit an assignment or publish a hub that contains work that is not your own, without indicating this, in other words acknowledging your sources, you are committing ‘plagiarism’ and this is considered an offence.

Therefore in brief plagiarism may occur when:

• Using a selected phrase or sentence that you find somewhere else, like another hub or bog post.

• Copying word-for-word from another source directly

• Paraphrasing the words or the contents from some other source very closely, online or off-line.

• plagiarising statistics or compiled facts from another source without reference.

• downloading or copying facts, photographs, images, diagrams or other media items without acknowledging sources.

Although you can write on work done by other people by referring to and quoting from them, using content in that way from such sources without credit is considered to be plagiarism and will not be accepted on HubPages and most if not all search engines now panelise for this type of online content.

This means if you use material from other sources you must make it clear as to which words, images, ideas and so on are yours and which have come from somewhere else, using quotation marks as well as in-text references.

3 Free plagiarism checkers online

(1) PlagiarismChecker

This is a nice and easy to use online checker. When you navigate to the above URL, on the home page you will see the search box, in that search box you have to just enter you text (from your hub or other source) and click the Search button to find out other sites, blogs etc., where your hub or text is possibly copied and published.

This online plagiarism software is designed for publishers like us at Hubpages. This tool also allows you to create a Google alert; this Google alert will send you emails every time when new posts similar to content are detected on the web.

Plagiarism: How to avoid it

(2) duplichecker

Another good one is Dupli Checker, it has a maximum 1500 words limit per search and you can search using formats “.doc, .Docx and txt files” this allows you to upload and check content in these file types online.

Using Dupli you can copy and paste text, or upload your textual content file and click 'search', the magic happens behind the scenes and you get the analysis reports within a few seconds if not minutes. All the sources like blogs; websites etc. from where the content was copied are displayed for easy navigation.

(3) plagiarisma

This is my best plagiarism checker, it is free and it gives the wonderful service online without installing any clients.

I use it more than the above two and it has never failed me with the results. It gives you an option to either copy and paste your text into a text box and click search to locate plagiarism sources or to provide a URL which you can then search.

This free plagiarism checker also accepts document types ‘PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT, TXT, HTML’, meaning you can simply upload the desired file format and click search to locate any sites that may have similar or plagiarised content from you.

This tool also provides you with the ability to understand the Plagiarism percentage and see how unique the content you have created is compared to other sources online.

Prof S on Plagiarism!

Let’s go Plagiarism free

I would highly recommend using these free checkers to make sure that when you create and publish a hub or blog post that it does not contain text that is an exact copy or very similar to something someone else has written.

Google and other search engines and even Hubpages is clamping down on copied content so it makes sense to do your own little plagiarism check, nothing better than making sure that you have unique content.
